Costume parties are fun, but there isn’t always the money to go out and spend a lot on something that will be worn once. Each year at Halloween, many families plan far ahead of time and make their own costumes. Probably the same amount wait until the last minute and scrounge around the house for this and that to put together into a semi-recognizable costume. For either type of family, there are many great ideas for do it yourself costumes that cost little to nothing.

Some popular homemade costume ideas include:

1. Cowboy/Cowgirl - This is especially easy if your family already dresses in Western attire. If you children already own cowboy or cowgirl boots and a hat, all you need to do is add some blue jeans and a long sleeve top. If you child has a pony on a stick toy, even better. Parents may also be able to find some rope lying around that can be used as a lasso prop.

2. Baby - This is perhaps the easiest costume to create, and is used by many families needing to pull together something at the last minute. All that is needed is footed pajamas, a pacifier and a stuffed animal. If you happen to have a baby bonnet around, it would add the perfect touch.

3. Chef - To create a little chef, simply add a child-sized apron to your child’s regular outfit. You can easily make a chef’s hat out of ordinary copy or construction paper, and give your little one a bowl and whisk to carry finishes the ensemble. The bowl can even be used as a candy bucket.

4. Mummy - One of the oldest last minute costume ideas, the traditional mummy is a popular choice each Halloween. All that is needed is rolls of strong bathroom tissues. To keep the costume sturdy, it should be used generously, so make sure you have plenty of rolls on hand. If the tissue fails to stay in place, you can use regular gauze, though the cost will be considerably higher than bathroom tissue.

5. Farmer - Much like the cowboy and cowgirl costume, dressing your child as a farmer may not require anything additional other than their regular clothes. Think about what you would see a farmer wearing - jeans or other dirty pants, a button up flannel shirt perhaps, and some work boots. To stand out as a farmer, try adding some hay inside shirt or pants pockets, and a fake pitchfork, rake or hoe as a prop.

Homemade costumes don’t have to involve months of preparation and days of sewing. If you don’t have the money to spend on an expensive costume, or if you have ran out of time to put something together, simply take a look around your house. Chances are you have all that you need for a do it yourself costume, without spending a dime.
